Mix white sugar, brown sugar, margarine and egg. Add in dates, pecans and vanilla. Mix thoroughly. Cook on low heat, very slowly, stirring often. Cook for 10 minutes DO NOT ALLOW MIXTURE TO BOIL. While mixture is cooking slowly, spread Rice Krispies on a cookie sheet or other flat surface (the kitchen counter works well). Pour mixture over Rice Krispies evenly. Allow to cool slightly. Roll the cooled mixture into small bite-sized ball (to prevent mixture from sticking to your hands, rub a light coating of margarine in the palms of hands. Roll in coconut as desired.
